Q: HOW DO I SEARCH UMLAUTS AND ß?

  • You do not need to include umlauts (ä, ö, ü) when searching. "Boll" will retrieve both "Böll" and "Boll".
  • Subsitute "ss" for ß. For example, "muß" should be searched for as "muss".

 

Q: HOW DO I SEARCH FOR CRITICISM FOR A PARTICULAR AUTHOR OR WORK

  • For general criticism, search the author's first and last name and "criticism" as subject keyword. All general criticism is listed under [Last name, First name] -- Criticism and interpretation. (For example, Mann, Thomas, 1875-1955 -- Criticism and interpretation.)
  • Criticism on a particular title are listed under the author's name and the original title of the work. For example, for Mann's Magic Mountain: Mann, Thomas, 1875-1955. Zauberberg.)
  • Also try keyword searches for more hits.

Q: HOW DO I FIND COMPLETE OR COLLECTED WORKS ("sämtliche Werke", "gesammelte Werke")

  • Try a TITLE search of the essay or chapter title. If this doesn't work, try a KEYWORD search. 
  • If this is a literary essay or a short story, search for the COMPLETE
