General Collections Care for Users

This guide gives users some guidelines on the care and handling of library materials in the general collections.

Insects and Other Pests

Insects pose a real threat to collections. A variety of these pests can attack binding materials, adhesives, and other substances. Some are attracted to the tight, dark places in storage areas and may do damage before being discovered. Environments with high humidity, poor air circulation, and poor housekeeping are environments where insects are most attracted. They are also attracted to food, garbage, and rubbish.

Let Circulation Know

If Library materials have come into contact with pests while in your possession, DO NOT return them through the book drop. Place items in a securely closed plastic bag and call Circulation (314-935-5420) or Preservation (314-935-4287) staff to make return arrangements.
