General Collections Care for Users

This guide gives users some guidelines on the care and handling of library materials in the general collections.

Forcing Flat: the Wrong Way

Never force a book flat when photocopying or scanning. Forcing books flat can break bindings and tear pages.

Also, do not press down hard with the photocopier or scanner cover onto the book. Don't smash the binding onto the glass.

Allowing Book to Sit Naturally: the Right Way

This is better. Allow the book to sit naturally on the copying or scanning surface. If necessary, it is ok to hold down lightly.

Pages can be loosened and eventually fall out as a result of pressing materials when photocopying or scanning.
