Identifying Damaged Materials to Send to Preservation

This guide should assist staff and student assistants in identifying circulating and other material that needs repair or rebinding.

Corners & Edges

In general, do not send books to the Preservation Unit with minor corner and edge problems. Books having only corner and edge problems can be numerous. It is somewhat of a judgement call for the person checking-in the book. If the damage seems particularly unsightly or the corner or edge seems more than a little compromised, it should be sent to us. However, for minor damage of this type it is better to return to the stacks if that is the only problem.

These are examples of corners or edges coming to the Preservation Unit.
