General Collections Care for Staff

This guide will assist library staff in the proper care and handling of library materials.

Tracking Damage

The Preservation Unit does track damage in books sent to it from Circulation and Shelving if there is mold or water damage, stains, missing pages and pet damage. If the damage is significant, Preservation will contact the bibliographer or subject specialist so that they may choose to  replace, or simply withdraw. If requested by Circulation, Preservation will give a cost estimate for treatment.

Tracking Damage

We do NOT track or try to correct highlighting, pen, or pencil marks unless requested to for specific items as requested by Circulation. Nonetheless, they they are considered a form of mutilation in libraries.
