New Books in Linguistics
The nature of the word : studies in honor of Paul Kiparsky - edited by Kristin Hanson and Sharon Inkelas
Call Number: P201 .N375 2009
ISBN/ISSN: 0262582805
Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, c2009.
"Paul Kiparsky's work in linguistics has been wide-ranging and fundamental. His contributions as a scholar and teacher have transformed virtually every subfield of contemporary linguistics, from generative phonology to poetic theory. This collection of essays on the word--the fundamental entity of language--by Kiparsky's colleagues, students, and teachers reflects the distinctive focus of his own attention and his influence in the field. As the editors of the volume observe, Kiparsky approaches words much as a botanist approaches plants, fascinated equally by their beauty, their structure, and their evolution. The essays in this volume reflect these multiple perspectives. The contributors discuss phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics bearing on the formal composition of the word; historical linguistic developments emphasizing the word's simultaneous idiosyncratic character and participation in a system; and metrical and poetic forms showing the significance of Kiparsky's ideas for literary theory."
Routes to language : studies in honor of Melissa Bowerman - edited by Virginia C. Mueller Gathercole.
Call Number: P118 .R687 2009
ISBN/ISSN: 1841697168
New York : Psychology Press, c2009.
"This volume contains contributions from leaders in the field of child language in honor of one of the lights, Melissa Bowerman, who has had a profound, widespread, and enduring influence on research conducted for nearly 40 years.".
Grammar acquisition and processing instruction : secondary and cumulative effects - Alessandro G. Benati and James F. Lee
Call Number: P118.2 .B453 2008
ISBN/ISSN: 184769103X
Bristol, UK ; Buffalo, NY : Multilingual Matters, c2008
"Research on Processing Instruction has so far investigated its primary effects. This book presents the results of a series of experimental studies investigating possible secondary and cumulative effects of Processing Instruction on the acquisition of French, Italian and English as a second language. The results of the three experiments have demonstrated that Processing Instruction not only provides learners with the primary benefit of learning to process and produce the morphological form on which they received instruction, but also a secondary benefit in that they transferred that training to processing and producing another morphological form on which they had received no instruction."
