What is a proxy server?
Why is a proxy server needed? How does it work?
Most of the databases and e-journals provided by the WashU Libraries are on the Web but are not free. You have access to them because a library purchases a subscription. The majority of the databases and journals are licensed to the entire Danforth Campus and are available to anyone physically located on the Danforth Campus. When you are off campus, however, you must logon with your WUSTL Key and have your affiliation with the University recognized before gaining access.
There are some law-specific databases licensed only to only the Law School. When you log into these databases and journals from off campus or via a wireless connection, you must logon with your WUSTL Key and have your affiliation with the Law School recognized. All Washington University students enrolled in a law school program or class, law faculty and law staff are authorized.
Once you have logged in using your wustl key, you should not be challenged again for your ID and password - until you turn off your computer, or close your browser. If you need help with your WUSTL Key or password, click here.
How to tell you are connected via Proxy:
- You are 'proxied' for resources licensed to the entire campus when you see 'libproxy.wustl.edu' in the first part of the URL in your browser's address bar, e.g., libproxy.wustl.edu
- You know you are 'proxied' for resources licensed to only the law school when you see "ezproxy.law.wustl.edu" in the first part of the URL in your browser's address bar, e.g., ezproxy.law.wustl.edu.
If you type in a new URL in the browser’s address box you will leave the proxy service.
