In the summer of 2022, I began working on an oral history project titled “Mississippi Mud: Visibility for Black Women’s Stories in Rural Mississippi”, which captures the connection between rural Black women and the land on which they live. This project came from doing a project for the class "Sabotage and Anarchy" during my freshman spring where I interviewed Black femmes from around the United States including my mother. The project seeks to explore the following research questions:
- Why is there a significant lack of archival data regarding Black people in Centreville, Mississippi?
- How have Black women been treated when observed through the lenses of gender and race?
- What place does geography have in the oral histories of Black women?
- Black geography (migration from rural to urban)
- Rural experiences, and
- the Deep South
My mentor for this project is Dr. Robin McDowell.
