Affirmative Action In Higher Education

If you are Black like me, struggles and hardships have always been a part of our lives. It is just never easy for us. That is why our achievements and accomplishments are so gratifying. Hard work, determination and resolve have been hallmarks of our lives. That is what the African American experience is and has always been. We hear the term "against all odds." That longstanding and venerable expression belongs to us. While we didn't coin the phrase, it certainly is a part of our life story. . .

Indian immigrants to the US were often heard saying that a reason for their coming was the reservation policy in university admissions and jobs back in India and they wanted their children to escape its clutches.

. . . Some students of color may lower their college ambitions School counselors and college coaches say Black and Latino students already hold off on applying to the nation’s top colleges, or worry they don’t deserve their spots when they get accepted. The latest Supreme Court ruling, they said, could cause more students to question their abilities and whether they want to pursue higher education — at a time when there’s already been a spike in students skipping college.

We asked experts to assess what the Supreme Court ruling means for students and families.

LaSueur Henderson Secondary School counselor and former Minnesota School Counselor Association Vice President Jessica Kirschner talked with MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer about the advice she plans to give students who are applying to college and the barriers some face to being admitted.
