Tips from Subject Librarians

  • Don't worry about diacritics. For Étranger, etranger will work. But change ß to ss.
  • Use asterisk (*) for truncation. For example, femini* will bring up feminine, feminism, etc.
  • Use the Thesaurus or Search Terms in records to get the best terms
  • Use to check for online and print access.
  • Use year spans to search time periods. For example 1900-1999 for 20th century.
  • Use original release titles. For example, for articles on the German novel Thomas Magic Mountain, use its original title Der Zauberberg. You would use the original title Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone instead of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the title of a later edition.
  • Click peer review for scholarly material.
  • Use facets on left-side to refine searches.
  • Create a My EBSCOhost account to create search alerts. Then you won't need to search for the same thing over and over.
