The Washington University Prison Education Project (PEP) offers a college education to incarcerated students at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC) in Pacific, Missouri, and the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia, Missouri. Established in 2014, PEP is a fully accredited degree program granting Associate in Arts and Bachelor of Science in Integrated Studies degrees. Prison staff are also eligible to earn degrees through University College.

Trevor Gardner’s research addresses various issues in crime governance with a primary focus on police. He has written extensively on the relationship between federalism and police administration and is developing a separate line of research regarding disparate African American perspectives on police-administered criminal procedure. Trevor’s scholarship has appeared or will appear in the Columbia Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, the Yale Law Journal, the Stanford Law Review, and the Boston University Law Review.
Trevor graduated from Harvard Law School in 2003 after serving as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard BlackLetter Law Journal. He went on to work in the Trial Division of the District of Columbia Public Defender Service, litigating juvenile and adult cases from presentment through disposition. After leaving criminal practice for academia, Trevor obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Sociology at UC Berkeley with a primary focus on social theory. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the University of Michigan Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research, the UC Berkeley Institute for the Study of Societal Issues, and the Washington University Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity.

The Fatal Interactions with Police (FIPS) database includes details on about 1,700 fatal interactions with police that occurred in jurisdictions across the United States during a 20-month time period from May 2013 to January 2015.
The FIPS research project includes contributions from public health and biostatistics experts at hospitals and universities, including Washington University in St. Louis, Saint Louis University, New York University and Harvard University.

Economist Andrew Jordan uses data analytics to uncover potential bias in the criminal justice system by studying the decisions made by courts, police, and prosecutors.
"By combining data analysis with models based in economic theory, Jordan can observe patterns in criminal cases to gain insights into prosecutorial decision making. Jordan’s recent work has focused on felony charges and plea bargaining in Chicago and Cook County, IL, where he examined prosecutors’ decisions about charges to file, cases to bring to trial, and terms of plea bargains. The patterns Jordan uncovered in the data suggest that prosecutors’ decision making includes some racial bias."
