Brief history of the African and African American Studies Department which began as the Black Studies program in September of 1969. It became a full department 48 years later in 2017.

This article provides a brief history of Black Student activism at Washington University. It mentions the 1968 "Black Manifesto" which outlined 10 demands of the Association of Black Students (ABS) including the demand for the creation of a Black Studies program.

"This collection [available in the University Archives, Olin Library] contains the Black Position Paper of 1968, the Black Manifesto of 1968, and correspondence with Chancellor Thomas H. Eliot concerning these documents and goals. Also included are documents relating the Brookings protest and other documents created by the student group. The collection also contains documents detailing action taken in 1978 and 1998 by the Association of Black Students and the administrators of Washington University.
