GIS Data and Resources

This guide provides geospatial data sources and citation guidance for use with GIS

The amount of geospatial datasets available for use is truly staggering. The below list is by no means definitive. It is curated to ensure trustworthiness and the links are checked periodically. Please let us know if something is broken and we will address it.

The Living Atlas of the World is a curated collection that has been compiled by ESRI to share authoritative maps, apps, and geospatial data for use in the ArcGIS ecosystem. Users can add regularly updated Living Atlas data layers to ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online projects without the need to download or manage source data. Types of data included in the Living Atlas include:

  • 30+ non-interactive reference layers (basemaps) to provide spatial context to your data layers, including Open Streetmaps.

  • Most recent high-res aerial / satellite / drone imagery from best available sources.

  • Vector layers with extractable data that can be downloaded to the shapefile or .json format.

    • US Census demographic and socio-economic data

    • Hydrology

    • Flood risks

    • Sentinel-2 land use / cover (current and historical)

    • Earthquakes, hurricanes, and weather

  • Limited (but growing) 3D datasets for viewing, not extraction.

If you are using ArcPro or AGOL, check if your data is available on the Living Atlas before looking outside of the ecosystem. Living Atlas data is ready to use, avoids duplicating effort, is well-documented, and frequently updated.

Online Public Datasets

Online Public Datasets by Location

Some data providers make their spatial data available as services that can be added to your maps.  The functionality of these services varies and can range from simple mapping to analysis or even exporting.  The service provider determines what functions are available and how users may interact with their datasets.  To add these services to ArcMap, see "Adding a web service from a GIS Server" in this guide.

Some examples of these types of services are:

  • St. Louis City (https://stlgis.stlouis-mo.gov/arcgis/rest/services)
The view-only services in the Public collection include building footprints and parcel boundaries.
  • Missouri Spatial Data Information Service (see this page for details)
This Missouri clearinghouse for geospatial data has an extensive collection of services including aerial imagery and vector features.
