Sources of Law and Types of Authority: Finding Authority

Options For Searching

Goal: Narrow the field of all legal information to the subset of authority necessary to analyze a legal issue

Three Ways to Begin

  • Retrieve documents from a known citation (e.g. 100 US 4)
  • Pre-filter by jurisdiction, topic and/or type of authority (source-driven research) and search only those sources
  • Search in federated (i.e. aggregated) content and then filter the results by jurisdiction, topic and/or type of authority
