Both books below, edited by Prof. Shirane, Columbia University, provide a versatile and accurate explanation about each literature in Japanese history. Please consult “Traditional Japanese Literature” for any works before 1600 and “Early Modern Japanese Literature” if you are looking for works after 1600 in the Edo period.
