Key activities and resources

Key activities

Key activities are the essential things a business needs to do to bring it's customers value. Key activities are arrived at more through discernment and enumerating the steps needed to deliver value, than by doing business research.

Key resources

Capital or assets make up the key resources needed to create value for a businesses customers.  At the most basic level they include the physical space and/or equipment needed.  Human capital and financial capital are almost always key resources and often intellectual property be it trademarks, trade secrets, copyrights, patents or proprietary business practices are also implicated.

  • Physical Spaces & Equipment-The garage is the iconic start-up space, but if commercial space is needed, looking to local commercial real estate brokers may be the next step.  For example the Philadelphia Business Journal closely follows developments and includes lists of top brokers.
  • Financial Capital-Once credit cards have been maxed out or friends and family loans are exhausted, looking for a small business loan or venture capital and eventually an IPO may be next steps.  Ebooks offer advice on how to craft a perfect pitch or understand the IPO process.
  • Human Capital-Your founding teams are often formed based on close relationships and unique skills sets.  When entering a growth stage thinking like a HR professional will be needed.  Search books and use HR websites for attracting, developing and retaining talent.
