About Data Analysis

            Data Analysis

Data Analysis includes all of the steps necessary to prepare a dataset for analysis and perform numeric, qualitative, or spatial analysis to produce new results or to calculate quantitative metrics describing the data.  These steps can include inspecting, scrubbing, filtering, querying, transforming and modeling data.

Data Services provides access to resources and support for data analysis projects.  We can help you find appropriate tools and training and can offer advice and hands-on experience for several common analysis tools including:

  • ArcGIS - Spatial mapping and analysis
    • Spatial Statistics
    • Cluster analysis
    • Geographically weighted regression
  • Excel - Data cleaning, filtering, and graphing
  • Python - Modular programming language with many data analysis functions
  • R - Statistical computing and graphics software
  • RStudio

Atlas.ti and NVivo are software tools for text mining and qualitative analysis and they both have been recently added to the suite of applications available in the Research Studio (Olin Library Level A room 06).  These applications are available now, and the Data Services team will begin providing support for NVivo in fall 2020.

The Research Studio features the applications listed above and several other Data Analysis software tools.  See this page for a complete listing.
