Interrogate Data: Data Exploration and Analysis

The Minor in Biomedical Data Science is designed to integrate data science principles — preparing, transforming, modeling, visualizing, validating and communicating data — with the unique challenges and considerations of medicine and health care. The curriculum encompasses: (1) fundamental mathematics concepts such as linear algebra, probability, statistics, and computer modeling; (2) specialized data science education necessary to practically approach the particular challenges of genomic data, sensor data, and healthcare data; and (3) learning the ethical considerations of privacy, equity, and access unique to medical data sharing and analysis.

The Certificate in Data Analytics focuses on data preparation, data analysis, applied statistics, and data visualization. Students in the program learn to communicate, problem solve and lead around data practices, making them competitive in the St. Louis region. Students are able to complete this certificate online, however, course availability may vary depending on the semester.

Students majoring in data science will have the formal foundation needed to understand the applicability and consequences of the various approaches to analyzing data with a focus on statistical modeling and machine learning. They will have the computing skills needed to ingest, manage and visualize data.

Any humanities student will feel at home in the data science in the humanities minor and in its research community. No previous experience with computational methods is required — the core curriculum equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate fluently the field of Digital Humanities, and those skills and that knowledge are eminently "transferable." Computational approaches to questions in the humanities are slowly migrating from the methodological fringes of the disciplines of cultural, artistic and historical inquiry; students in the minor will have the opportunity to engage with the emerging future of their fields — and to help shape that future.

The Data for Social Impact free online course is designed using community feedback from public roundtable events, through collaborations with leaders from diverse organizations and roles across the St. Louis social sector, and in consultation with national leaders in the field of data for social impact. DataLab provides a wide range of workshops, from understanding data to working with data tools. These workshops are open to all WashU affiliates and are held in the fall and spring semesters. Data Savvy is a set of self-paced courses delivered through Canvas. It complements semester-length courses taught at Washington University in St. Louis. These courses do not replace full-term courses offered by WashU schools and departments.
