Identifying Damaged Materials to Send to Preservation

This guide should assist staff and student assistants in identifying circulating and other material that needs repair or rebinding.

Tape & Home Repair

Sometimes patrons attempt "home repair" which can be well-meaning but usually involves the use of acidic or adhesive materials. The Preservation Unit can usually mend many paper tears, for instance, using an ultrathin, non-acidic transparent paper or Japanese tissue. Damaged or detaching covers can usually be fixed or sent out for rebinding. Send books with such "home repairs" to the Preservation Unit for review.
