Identifying Damaged Materials to Send to Preservation

This guide should assist staff and student assistants in identifying circulating and other material that needs repair or rebinding.

Water Damage

Water can cause damage out of all proportion to its amount. In the case of wet books, mold can form within 48 hours or less. Contact the Preservation Unit (935-4287, 935-4612) if you have a wet book.

In addition, the Preservation Unit does track damage in books sent to it from Circulation and Shelving if there is mold or water damage -- wet or dry. If the damage is significant, Preservation will contact the bibliographer or subject specialist so that they may choose to replace, or simply withdraw. If requested by Circulation, Preservation will give a cost estimate for treatment.
